Hello Parents,
Many children have been bringing toys and other special items like jewelry to school. Unfortunately, sometimes these items get lost or broken when they are at school. Because of this, please encourage your child to leave their special things at home. Thanks for your help! Miss Clachrie

It’s time again for Valley View’s annual food drive! From December 4th to 8th, students will be bringing non-perishable food to school to help address hunger on a local level. Supporting the Calgary Food Bank is the perfect way to participate in the spirit of the season. When making your donation please think about the non-perishable food in your own home. What do you usually buy and use? Those items often make the best donations. It’s helpful for donors to double check the expiry dates on items they bring in. See below for a list of non-perishable food needed: Cereal Peanut butter Pancake mix Syrup Canned meat (ham, turkey) Canned fish Canned fruit Canned vegetables (corn, peas, carrots, mixed vegetables) Stuffing mix Cranberry sauce (whole berry) Soup (tomato, cream of mushroom, chicken noodle, chunky-style soups & stews, dry packaged soups, canned chili) Pasta sauce (tomato based) Juice Brown Beans Dry Pasta Baby Food Thank you! Today was a whirlwind of a day. Grow Calgary was an amazing field trip that offered many educational insights into fall, gardening and giving back. We learned about composting, reusing materials, green houses (where we saw tomatoes and pumpkins) and where they grow the food. We were so lucky that we got to race Farmer Paul to the top of a dirt mountain. The farmers use this dirt to help plant their crops. We went into the earth ship, which was a small building with used tires and recycled materials to help plants grow during the winter. We saw the trailer they used to store all of the seeds they plant. We learned that Grow Calgary gives away all of the food they grow to families that don’t have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. We even got to see the hardest workers at the farm: the bees and worms! They work the hardest by pollinating and decomposing. We look forward to continue to learn about the changing seasons, how plants grow and what we can do to help give back to our community. Thank you to all our volunteers without you this would not have been possible. If you would like to volunteer on a future field trip, please stop by the office and they will help you get started. Here are some questions to ask your child: -Who is the hardest worker on the farm? -Does Grow Calgary keep the food they grow? -What kinds of fruits and vegetables do they grow? Assembly
On Tuesday, the Grade 3s will be putting on a Halloween Safety Assembly for all Valley View students at 1:30 pm. Parents are also welcome to join us for this. It will last about half an hour and the Grade 3s have put the whole thing together. Costumes If your child would like to dress up for Halloween, please send their costume with them in a bag on the morning of Halloween. The children will be given time to put on their costumes after lunch and will attend the assembly in their costumes. If possible, send your child with a costume that is easy for them to put on themselves, over top of their regular clothes (we won't have that much time to change so this will really help us all out). If your child is not dressing up for Halloween, that is just fine as well. With the weather getting cooler, students have been starting to wear warmer clothing to school. In kindergarten, we want the children to become as independent as possible with dressing for outside. At home, try to allow extra time to have your child practice putting on and zipping up his or her coat and putting on boots, hats, mitts and backpacks by his or herself. If possible, send your child in shoes/boots that don't have laces unless they can tie them independently. Thank you for your help!
Miss C We have been exploring fall this month in kindergarten. We've gone outside a few times to look at the leaves changing colours on the trees, and collected leaves from the ground. We've also talked about why the leaves change colour and fall off the trees at this time of year.
We read the story "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert and created our very own leaf men with the leaves we found outside. We also found some special maple leaves in our classroom when we returned. Check out our artwork! It has been a busy month in Kindergarten! Here's a list of everything else coming up.
Monday, October 23: Picture Day! Friday, October 27: Field Trip to Grow Calgary. Please make sure to send your child's field trip for back as soon as you can. If you have a police clearance and would like to volunteer, please let me know and I will send you the volunteer from for the field trip. We can't go on the field trip unless we have enough volunteers! Tuesday, October 31: Halloween. Students are allowed to wear their costumes in the afternoon. Participation is entirely optional. On Thursday, Sept. 28, Valley View School will be having our Terry Fox assembly and run. In room 22, we learned about Terry and his journey. If possible, students have been asked to bring Toonies for Terry on Thursday to support people with cancer.
Some important forms that need to be returned went home on Sept. 21. Thank you to those who have returned the forms already. If you need another set of forms, let me know. If you are interested in volunteering on our field trip at the end of October, make sure you fill out the volunteer forms and get your Police Check done online ASAP. We'd love you have you join us! Thank you, Allison Clachrie (Miss C) Today in Room 22, we learned our first letter as a class. We are using the Jolly Phonics program to learn letters, so letters aren't taught in alphabetical order. Today we learned what sound Ss makes and brainstormed some words that start with Ss. Here are a few of the words the students thought of:
This week in kindergarten, we will continue to discover more words that start with S! If you want to work on letter sounds with your child at home, check out: more2.starfall.com/n/level-k/index/load.htm Allison Clachrie (Miss C) |
