If you have not already done so, I hope you are able to sign up for one of our Parent/Teacher Conference times this Thursday evening or Friday morning. Students are preparing some great activities to show you their learning, and there are prizes being drawn throughout the night for families who attend to win books!
Appointments are 15 minutes long, and can be booked through the office, or with your CBE online account. If your child is working on an IPP, please let the office know so they can book a double time slot.

Thank you to Paul Kelba, the Sustainability Education Coordinator at Calgary Board of Education for providing us with the opportunity to experience the winter activity of snowshoeing.
Physical education is enhanced through opportunities to participate in activities such an snowshoeing, which builds on our gross motor development and over confidence. We made observations while we were on our snowshoe walks that helped us practice skills that connect us to the world around us. We had so much fun snowshoeing last week. Our little legs are exhausted from trudging through the deep snow, but it was a fantastic experience. "I think a beaver knocked this tree over... I see the marks!" Thank you to our parent volunteers who made our field study at Inglewood possible. We were so fortunate to have such beautiful weather for our field study!
We learned about coyotes, bumble bees, deer and ducks. We learned where they live, what they eat and some interesting facts about these creatures. We also made puppets and saw some animal artifacts. We went on a nature walk through the forest and along the river. We saw animal tracks, ducks and geese flying in the air as well as animal scat. Here are some questions you can ask your child: Ask your child what animal evidence they saw. Ask your child how animals adapt for the winter. Ask your child what animal scat is. Ask your child what the difference between a zoo and a sanctuary is. Hello Parents of Valley View Kindergarten,
Some of you may know that we have a field study planned for February 28th to Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. This is a great opportunity for our students to have hands-on learning experiences outdoors, learning how to be stewards of our environment. This field trip is in danger of being cancelled. This is due to the lack of parent volunteers that have their police clearance to accompany us. Kindergarten students must be in groups of no more than 5 students for every adult, which means we need a total of 10 adults, including teachers, to be with us at all times during each trip. If you are able to join us on this field trip, or any possible field trip in the future, it is important that you come in to the office to begin the process of being cleared as a volunteer. Please let you child's teacher know that you have begun this process. Thank you for your support - it takes a village! Valley View Food Drive: December 4 – 8, 2017
It’s time again for Valley View’s annual food drive! From December 4th to 8th, students will be bringing non-perishable food to school to help address hunger on a local level. Supporting the Calgary Food Bank is the perfect way to participate in the spirit of the season. When making your donation please think about the non-perishable food in your own home. What do you usually buy and use? Those items often make the best donations. It’s helpful for donors to double check the expiry dates on items they bring in. See below for a list of non-perishable food needed: Cereal Peanut butter Pancake mix Syrup Canned meat (ham, turkey) Canned fish Canned fruit Canned vegetables (corn, peas, carrots, mixed vegetables) Stuffing mix Cranberry sauce (whole berry) Soup (tomato, cream of mushroom, chicken noodle, chunky-style soups & stews, dry packaged soups, canned chili) Pasta sauce (tomato based) Juice Brown Beans Dry Pasta Baby Food We got to meet with our Grad 4/5 Big Buddies, and make some art to follow-up a presentation from Kananaskis in the Classroom.
Students at Valley View learned about the wetland animals such as beaver and muskrat. Ask your child what body parts a beaver has, and what they are used for! Monday November 13 - Jigging trip to City Hall, 12pm - 2pm
Thursday November 16 - Half Day for Students, Parent-Teacher Conferences 4pm - 7:15pm (please sign up online) Friday November 17 - Parent-Teacher Conferences 8am-11:30am (please sign up online) Monday November 20 - National Child's Day - Please wear blue Tuesday November 21 - Metis Calgary Family Services family meeting 5:30pm, at Native Network Friday was a whirlwind of a day. Grow Calgary was an amazing field trip that offered many educational insights into fall, gardening and giving back. We learned about composting, reusing materials, green houses (where we saw tomatoes and pumpkins) and where they grow the food. We were so lucky that we got to race Farmer Paul to the top of a dirt mountain. The farmers use this dirt to help plant their crops. We went into the earth ship, which was a small building with used tires and recycled materials to help plants grow during the winter. We saw the trailer they used to store all of the seeds they plant. We learned that Grow Calgary gives away all of the food they grow to families that don’t have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. We even got to see the hardest workers at the farm… the bees and worms. They work the hardest by pollinating. We look forward to continue to learn about the changing seasons, how plants grow and what we can do to help give back to our community. Thank you to all our volunteers. Without you this would not have been possible. If you would like to volunteer on a future field trip, please stop by the office and they will help you get started. Here are some questions to ask your child: -Who is the hardest worker on the farm? -Does Grow Calgary keep the food they grow? -What kinds of fruits and vegetables do they grow?
